Children in the Kitab Book club, read from a selected themed book to help increase their vocabulary, comprehension and reading skills. Books are easy to read books, with occasional short stories or themes. Joining the book club is a great supplement to your Arabic studies and a means for you and your child(ren) to slowly but consistently have learning Arabic apart of your life. Meetings will take place to give children the opportunity to discuss the book and do related activities centered around reinforcing and implementing the Arabic vocabulary learnt.

Club Reading Book # 1 - September 2013
We began with our first book read: " ما هو لوني؟ " - What Colour Am I?
The book repeatedly asks the question ' ما هو لوني ' while hinting its colour to various objects. Children will be able to test their knowledge of the many colours of the rainbow in Arabic (as the answers are not provided in the book). The book is large in size, short (14 pages) and attractive to the sight - a good and comfortable start to Arabic reading!
One can derive the following from this book:
- Arabic Colours
- Question Word ما (what?) and how it is used to ask a questions
- Possessive Pronoun (first person singular) - indicated by the ي sakin (preceded by kasrah) suffixed to the noun لون (my colour = لوني)
- Subject Pronoun هو
- Possessive Construction (mudhaf/mudhaf ilayhi)

" كيف حال الجو؟ " - How is the Weather? "
As we transition between the seasons with the many colours around us, a book about weather was the most appropriate choice to help the children master the vocabulary in this book.
From a window, a little boy sees the various forms of weather as the seasons changes.
The most common types of weather are clearly displayed within the pages: windy, snowy, foggy, cloudy, rainy, and sunny. The book also provides other words relevant to weather such as: wind, lightning, thunder, snow, clouds, rain and sun.
This book is also 14 pages long and in a large format.
One can derive the following from this book:
- words associated with weather
- how to say: "It is a ... day"
- practice using the verb أرى "I see"
- familiarity of nouns in the accusative case (mansoob)
- preposition ِمِنْ (from)
Pictures from January, 19th Book Club meeting "كيف حال الجو؟ " - How is the Weather?"
From my window " من نافذتي " as a little girl is looking out from her window as in the book, seeing the weather and its changing seasons.
As she is looking out her window, she see's snow falling (we used cotton balls to represent snow - threw them up in the air as the children watched the cotton fall everywhere).
..... إنه يوم مثلج
She feels rain (with a spray bottle -water sprayed on the kids).
..... إنه يوم ماطر
She feels wind ( fan was turned on the kids to get the windy feeling).
...... إنه يوم عاصف
She see's fog (a light sheer scarf covering her view).
...... إنه يوم الضاب
She hears thunder and see's lighting (flashlight pointed to the ceiling and thunder sounds made).
...... إنه يوم البرق

A memorable craft to take home....
Kids created their own images of lighting, sun, rain, clouds, fog and snow using play-dough and cloth material on flip open file folder.
